Chrome: The new kid on the block.

Google just release the beta of Chrome . It’s seems to be very good (for a beta), and has some interesting ideas like the Omnibox, a process for each tab (with task manager) , etc. (Features) .

It’s based on webkit ant the most site I visited work correctly. It’s very similar to Firefox in performance loading pages, and faster in startup. Let’s see how it evolves, but I think it comes to stay. It makes a good first impression, contrasting the CUIL example.

The only think I miss from Firefox are the Firefox extensions and Google toolbar (yeah, rare missing it in the Google browser?).

Wii and Opera: My new internet browser.

From some time ago I use my TV as my Internet Browser. How?

Using my Nintendo Wii and its Opera browser. I can read my emails, news, stocks quotes, DK forum, Gmail, youtube, etc. The internet… I think Nintendo Wii is the first massive way of get the internet in your home TV. Also the Wiimote make excellent jobs as a mouse pointer and scroll. Now I can switch between my home TV and the Internet with just one button click.

The last update of the Nintendo Wii include support for USB keyboard in the Opera Browser, so now I can navigate easily as I did before with the Wiimote and also write something (user info, mails, urls, etc). using the keyboard, Nice!

It’s not really my IPhone, it’s from my friend Dane Drotts.

Anyway, I was playing with it for a while and there is no other conclusion, after using it for a while you want to buy one :). The interface is so nice, you can easily (without reading any manual) view your photos, videos, browse the web, check the stocks quotes, etc, etc and also make calls :) .

I now understand why the “new kid on the mobile block” sell 1 millions of IPhone and why the stock AAPL continue raising in the last months strongly.

AAPL probably reach the 3 millions estimation for the end of the year, and the stock continues raise? ,we will see it….

My Aunt Computer Disk Crash

So like in many cases they call to the “computer expert” in the family :) .

I plug the disk in my work desktop and it recognizes it, but as unformatted drive. After working a couple of hours with some trials recovery files programs available in the net. I get one that could do the work and recover the files her want without a problem, the files where intact there!!

So I recommend to her to use Mozy, an online backup service I already use for a month or so.

The Good think I found in Mozy is that they give a free 2GB account, the configuration is really easy, you select what data you want to backup and you can schedule your backups or leave they run automatically.
The interface included in XP is very good and you can recover any file in any version of it from your win XP explorer.

If you want to try it you can find it here . I think that when I pass over the 2GB limit I will buy an unlimited account :) .

DeKlarit and Enterprise Library Policy Injection feature.

The policy injection is a very useful feature of the Enterprise Library to add custom code to your application without any modification on it, only changing it .config file.

You can find more about policy injection here and some examples if you install the Enterprise Library.

In DeKlarit we added the support to use policy injection in the Business Framework and in all of our generated applications. If download Deklarit 4.3 the help include an explanation of how to use it, it’s really easy and you can find an example here

We hope that this feature allow our customer to make their applications more configurable and add logging or auditing stuff very easy.

Using Infragistics Web Menu as a toolbar in a web Form.

I made the same example using Infragistics Menu.

The result was practically the same as with the standard menu .
Pros: The problem I had with the standard menu and the ImageUrl was solved in the Infragistics control. It uses an ImageDirectory property that can be set in the Theme, so the Images are loaded correctly.
Cons: Despite the fact that the Separator Items are not working in the Infragistics control in the top level. I get an answer from Infragistics support saying that it’s by design :( ("The current version of WebMenu does not have built in support for separators on the top level of the menu"). I hope they include that in the next one.

Here is the new example code .

Compiler Warning message: “Found conflicts between different versions of the same dependent assembly”.

If you get that warning message by “Double click” on the warning you will receive a prompt "One or more dependent assemblies have version conflicts. Do you want to fix these conflicts by adding binding redirect records in the app.config file?".
Click “Yes” and VS will add something like the following in your app.config:

Riya: Really Impressive application YeAh !

I was using Riya for a while with a couple of friend at work (Gaston Milano, Jorge Juan Mastropietro) and I found it very interesting.
After I teach Riya about the faces I know in a hundred of picture she starts recognizing the rest of the faces in the other pictures I uploaded.
Among the great web application (AJAX based) and the unbeliever recognizing face software, it amazing the lot of opportunities that this application gives to us.

How long will take until everybody face can be finding in a Riya Search? :)

Using Asp .net 2.0 Web Menu Control as a toolbar in a web Form.

I was testing the Asp .Net 2.0 Menu Control to use in the DeKlarit generated pages as a toolbar.
Definitely it’s a good option to use in Asp .Net pages, you add usability options and you could get a good design like:

Here is an example of this use of the Control.

The toolbar has a background image, a separator image, and change it look when you hover each option.
For each item you can define the Text and the Image for it.
In the sample I use themes (skin and .css). You could easily add your own theme and change all the look and fell of the toolbar. In the .aspx only the items are defined and all style is in the skin file.

The only problem I found was that there is not an easy way to set the ImageUrl depending on the theme, because as explain in several place in the web, if you set the Items in the skin then it will override the items you define on the page.
The workaround I found was setting the “ImageUrl” in the code behind taking into account the theme. Obviously if your image doesn’t depend on the theme you don’t have this problem and you can set the “ImageUrl” directly in the page.
If any one has a solution for that, you are welcome to post here.

I will do the same job with the Infragistics Ultra Web Menu and I will post the result here.
